WTF?
Everybody loves inside jokes!

"I bet you can't give me an answer to that one."

Bah, you just want out of an update, you entrail-basket.

IS THAT ALL YOU GOT?

-Soapy

I may be a slacker, but you know what? I'LL TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT!

-SV

WTF?

Of course I can answer that. It's easy. A close examination of the topic reveals that you did NOT in fact elaborate on what "WTF" is an acronym for. While some may argue that everyone knows WTF means What The Fuck, the term is not as consistent as that. Many people prefer to substitute "Fuck", for any word of their choice. "Frig", "Fudge" and "FahrwegSchneeLand" are popular examples. Occasionally, "What" is even substituted with "Why".

Thus we can clearly see that the acronym is not a consistent one, and can be used however the writer sees fit. In the event that the writer does not clarify what he/she means, it is left up to the reader to decipher the meaning, which is precisely what you did. Thus, I will determine that by "WTF?", you meant "Where's The Food?". The food is in the fridge. Good day sir.

-stareyE

Actually, in the time since I asked, I did find some food, although I think it would have been helpful to know there was some in the fridge. I went all the way out to Dairy Queen. This knowledge will save me tons of money!

-SV

We're one big happy...

SV, you talk about needing more replies to mailbag, and then you try to make a "zomg impossible question".

WTF?

-Krem

It's funny that it got so many replies though. It's that crazy POS sense of humor.

Super subatomic particle BULL!

Ah ha, you may think that my vast wealth can't bullshit an answer, but you'd be wrong! The current answer to the question for this week is: zgwolufsky (Give or take about twenty fusioning upper-quark tai particles)

-GSGold

The current answer? Does this mean the answer will change soon? I don't think there is even an answer. Anyway, speaking of tai particles, I want to be a physics major.

You lose. stareyE already told me where the food was.

-SV

Piss!

I think the cause of the Third World's problems today starts with European imperialism. They scrambled to make colonies, made treaties with each other, divvied other countries up like a piece of pie, without a shred of respect for the countries they were taking. They drew up arbitrary boundaries with no respect to ethnic groups or rivalries between them. Then they went in and enslaved the people, forcing them to drain their homelands of their resources and ship them back to the home countries to be used to fuel the insatiable, resource-devouring maw of the Industrial Revolution. And now, as independence has been gained for most these colonies, can we really be surprised that it's nothing but chaos for most of them? Can we really be surprised that they live in such terrible conditions since we left nations of slaves, stripped out their resources, out to dry? We can't undone what they've done in the past, but I can sure bitch about it.

-Wally

Imperialism is empire building. Expansion occurs when one state is more powerful than are the obstacles to expansion. The obstacles may be other states or peoples, or they may be geographic or physical or technological obstacles.

The central core of the empire may be a nation-state, or in ancient times, a city state or a tribe.

European civilization experienced a period of unprecedented rapid expansion around the globe during the last third of the nineteenth century. European nation-states had become very powerful because of industrialization and because of the organizational efficiency of the nation-state.

European global expansion had actually begun in the fifteenth century, but the process greatly accelerated in the nineteenth century.

Latin America and the seaports of Asia and Africa were the first to be colonized by Europeans. Native Americans were liquidated or thoroughly subjugated to European rule. Most Latin American descendents (Latinos) of the Spanish conquerors gained independence from Spain by the early 19th century, while many indigenous peoples remained subject.

The African climate, disease and geography delayed most European colonization until the 19th century, although the descendents of Dutch settlers, known as Afrikaans or Boers, came to South Africa as early as the 16th century.

Slavery took a heavy toll on African development ever since the 16th century. Millions of young people of working age were taken away. Great conflict ensued.

Asia's population was too great, its civilization too firmly established for Europeans to rule it directly. The Europeans did establish control over seaports and trade. In places like India and Indonesia, Europeans ruled indirectly through their domination of the local aristocracy.

England was the leading European colonial power and had already established much of its overseas empire by the beginning of the 19th century.

France was second, with its holdings in Southeast Asia and in North Africa, both of these being established during the 19th century.

Portugal, Spain and Holland retained some colonies because they had been the earliest colonial powers, and still retained some of them in the 19th century.

Germany and Italy were late arrivals on the colonial scene because they had only unified themselves in the 1860's.

The United States became a colonial power at the end of the 19th century, after having spent the century moving across the North American continent to the Pacific Ocean. Defeat of Spain in the Spanish-American War led to the establishment of American colonies in the Caribbean and in the Philippines. The Hawaiian Islands were conquered at the sametime. (1890's)

Japan was the first Asiatic nation to become a colonial power. Long isolated and refusing to trade with Europeans, except for a limited, controlled trade with Holland, the Japanese were forced to trade by a United States naval squadron in 1845. Subsequently, the Japanese experienced a political revolution. The new leadership modernized rapidly by adopting European technology and organization.

The British forced China to open itself to the Opium trade in the 1840's. China also experienced social upheaval (The Tai Ping rebellion), and was unable to prevent foreign domination of its trade. By the end of the 19th century, England, Germany, Russia, Japan, and the United States had all compelled China to trade with them. Russia occupied Manchuria and Port Arthur, Japan was in Korea, Germany was in the Shantung peninsula, and the British were in Hong Kong.

The French, the British, the Germans and the Italians competed with each other in the last third of the 19th century to lay claim to Africa. The Belgian king Leopold was also extensively involved. The only remaining areas of Africa not colonized by the end of the century were Ethiopia in the horn of Africa and Liberia on the Atlantic coast.

Another aspect of European expansion in the last half of the 19th century involved the emigration of large numbers of Europeans to other parts of the world. European population had been increasing more rapidly than non-European populations during this time. Population pressure combined with improved overseas transportation led to the greatest migration in history up to that time.

The ease with which Europeans dominated non-European areas of the world is explained by the power they had resulting from industrialization and the nation-state organization.

But the explanations that Europeans made to themselves were that they were superior to non-European peoples. There were a number of racist ideas widely believed by Europeans:

Whites were superior to non-whites. One variation was Rudyard Kipling's idea of the White Man's Burden. The white man had the burden and responsibility of bringing the blessings of their superior civilization to the savages of the non-European world.

Another was a variation of Social Darwinism in which white Europeans were considered more fit in the struggle for survival. Another variation was that Christianity was the only true religion.

Racist attitudes also separated northern Europeans from southern Europeans, Anglo-Saxons, Nordics and Teutons from Latins, and Aryans from Semites.

Anti-Semitism had traditionally been interpreted on the basis of religion with Jews considered to be Christ-killers. A new anti-Semitic concept of Jews as an inferior race, which endangered the purity of Aryans, developed in the late 19th century, particularly in eastern Europe.

Vienna, as the capitol of the multi-ethnic Austrian Empire, was a particular site for the greatest variety of anti-Semitic writings.

Racism and anti-Semitism was a virulent motivating force in 19th century Europe, which boded ill for the future.

Mailbag: Week of 3-19-05
What's your favo(u)rite video game soundtrack and why?
Final Paper Trigger 13000

Thats a tough one so I'll give my top three...

#3 FF8 the whole thing was like a playable movie with the soundtrack it had. I mean who can help but get into gunning down baddys to " the Man with the machine gun"

#2 Chrono Trigger The undersea palace, Magus Battle, world revolution, frogs theme? Need I really say more?

#1 Paper Mario The Thousand year door God this soundtrack rawks my sawks. With every Boss battle having its own kicking theme its a pleasure cruise for my ears! Which one among us can honestly say he/she wasnt ready to throw down to Magnus Von grapple's battle theme or awesome the X-naughts base theme was.... when I get my evil lair THAT SHALL PLAY TWENTY FOUR SEVEN >:D

-Rick

All hail the Dooplis battle theme! Honestly, PMTTD really has an awesome soundtrack. The only other Gamecube game I can think of that has a good soundtrack is Tales of Symphonia. And Chrono Trigger's soundtrack just rocks your socks, pants, shirt and underpants (optional). You my friend, have good taste in vg music.

-SV

I'll take a #2...right?

I'm too lazy to add a Midi/mp3, but I'd have to say...(lesse now... Sonic... Zombies Ate My Neighbors... or Donkey Kong... hmm... There's always Zelda too...)

I'd have to say Sonic 1,2,3, &Kuckles, 3d Blast--- pretty much any sonic from Sonic... they don't have to Remix any of it, it's good enough as it is...

BTW Oil Ocean + Chemical Plant Zone = PWNS!!!! Ok I'm done ^-^

-UnbrokenTorment

My only experience with Sonic is when I went there to order a couple of chili dogs. I'll just take your word (and probably Static's too) that it has good music.

-SV

Dig the classics

I have to say that today's more updated music still doesn't phase me as much as the retro ones do. My favorite soundtrack is no doubt Sonic 3D Blast for the Genesis. The Saturn version is like 2nd place. But, coming in close third would have to be Donkey Kong Country 2. A few honorable mentions would be the Sonic The Hedgehog series, Paper Mario, Sonic Battle, and Zombies ate my Neighbors.

I luffs my music.

-StarKirby

You and UT must be good friends...you guys have nearly the same interests in vg music. You weird Texas freaks. :P SK is automatically more awesome because he likes DKC 2 music, which rocks more than Chrono Trigger.

-SV

Your first love

My Fav.? The River City Ransom RCH Bos Theme (Turbo Grafx Super CD version of song was a RPotW). Why? Because I like RCR, and think it's the best out of them all.

-RPGMaker35

One day you will be happily married. Then one day you will get divorced because your wife will find you having an affair with RCR.

-SV

SoaponaRope: Seeds of Doom, coming soon to a Playstation near you

Anyone who has looked at the media folder on my computer knows I have an ungodly collection of video game music. :P

I don't even know where to begin when choosing a favorite soundtrack... Baten Kaitos (which I'm currently playing) has a great one; I'm tempted to choose it here and now. However, after some thought, I think my top three (in no order) are:

Chrono Cross Final Fantasy Tactics Yoshi's Island

My reasons for choosing these are unclear... it was just the first three games that came to mind that caused me to lose sleep due to their tunes' being stuck in my head.

I'm replying from school, so no sound files will be provided. However, these are fairly popular games and music from them shouldn't be too difficult to find.

Some other random tracks in particular from other games are great too (again, the first that come to mind):

FF8 - Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec
FF8 - The Extreme
Zelda: Link's Awakening - Tal Tal Heights
Zelda: Majora's Mask - Termina Field
FF9 - You're Not Alone
F-Zero GX - Cosmo Terminal
Baten Kaitos - Chaotic Dance
FF5 - (I forget the name, but it's the third overworld theme)
FF6 - Terra (World of Balance)

K that's all. Oh and Majora's Mask - Oath to Order while I'm at it. ;)

-Soapy

First hand experience, guys: Soap can sing the Oath to Order. It's quite sexy.

Zelda music from any game (except maybe the Oracle games) will stick in your head. I find myself humming Zelda 3 music all the time. That and OoT music. And by your FF9 should be the word "all."

Coincidentally, I'm listening to the Final Fantasy Tactics soundtrack while completing this mailbag.

-SV

I'm still laughing about the dumbassometer

I generate my own video game music. Every single kickass song in every game every is on a nice CD for me. Therefore, I have no goddamn clue where most of the songs come from.

-GSGoldSoft

You just need an organization system. Talk to Soap; I don't know how he manages all the music he has.

-SV

This week in review.

I think that this mailbag has proven one thing: older games are better. Not only was the gameplay better, but the soundtracks were too. If anyone's wondering, my favorite soundtrack is from DKC 2, but my single favorite track is from Pokemon Gold/Silver. I could listen to the Goldenrod city theme all day! Anyways...

Don't forget to reply to next week's mailbag!

Mailbag: Week of 3-12-05
What's the dumbest thing you've ever done?
Hot air

Bought lottery tickets...

No seriously though, sometime last semester, I was really hyper. So I was running around before school, and I was running to Music Building, and I ran full speed into the door, knocked the wind out of myself, and did it again x_x.

-UnbrokenTorment

The latter is pretty dang funny, but the former isn't actually all that bad. Here in Georgia the Lottery funds the HOPE scholarship (which is paying for about 1/4 of my college tuition), so even though you won't see me out buying a lotto ticket, I support the crazy people that do.

-SV

Best. Idea. Ever.

I never do dumb things! I have a Dumbassometer which perfectly guages how close I am to making an idiot of myself. Now if only Robotron would fix it...

-GSGoldSoft

I need one of those. Not for me, of course, but for the idiots around me. They need to know just how stupid they are.

-SV

Elmer Fudd, now in Canadian!

So... we're not supposed to play in the McDonald's tube maze thing anymore? Crap.

The dumbest thing I ever did? Well jeez, you'd think it would be easier to think of something. Fortunatly, like the Klondike Bar topic, I have a receint story from while I was away.

Thursday evening, I was sitting at a table with some of my friends. We had all sorts of fun discussion about random subjects, especially about how some of the blondest people we know are brunettes. During this time, I was playng with an elastic. I proceded to wrap it around two mostly empty cups of juice and have fun by stretching them apart and having them bounce back, and looking through them like bonoculars. I then decided to drink the remaining juice in them. Naturally, I didn't think to seperate them before drinking. I drank out of one, and the other one spilled juice on my hot new shirt that says "New York Attitude", and has a picture of Calvin looking grumpy. A few minutes later I accidentaly stuck my elbow in the juice on the table, and shot myself with the elastic at the exact same time. It was hilarious.

Story two! Yesterday me and my friends Steven, Jordan and Nathan were in a mall. We then found some camoflage shirts that say "Shhh, I'm hunting for wabbits" on sale for 9$. We then decided, "Hey, let's all buy one and run around the mall looking stupid!" So we did just that. We ran throught the mall in single file, about ten feet apart. As we were passing by, I heard this one girl whisper to her friend, "They're hunting for wabbits." It was so awesome.

So those are my most receint escapades. I hope you enjoyed reading about them as much as I enjoyed preforming. And don't worry about my shirt, if the stain doesn't come out I'm going to tye-dye it. :D

-stareyE

Like I said last time, you can always go back when the employees aren't looking. Anyways, I'm glad you enjoyed New York/America. Too bad I couldn't share some of my blonde jokes (here's a visual one).

The wabbit shirt thing sounds like something my friend Angela and I would do. We're such a wonderfully spiteful pair; we'd find a way to be jerks to people while having a great time being stupid.

Tye-dye Calvin? You have to take a picture of that.

-SV

It's almost the same...

I'm not sure...but today I accidently put salt in my Kool-Aid instead of sugar. They look too alike.

-Allthesmallthings

Sometimes little things can be pretty funny. One time I poured tea into my cereal bowl instead of milk. That's what I get for making tea in an old milk jug.

-SV

Slacker

I once didnt do my math homework for half a school year... roughly 40 some odd assignments in my locker in a stack

damn worksheets. well I never told my dad and one day he got called in... >.>

well long story short I ended up changing all the tires on my dads car by myself and washing dishs for three months ah school days school days....

-Rick

Once I didn't do a huge project in my chemistry class and I had 20 in the class for half the semester. Somehow I managed to pull of a 92. Don't ask me how.

-SV

This week in review.

I was a little late again, but so were half the replies. Oh well, we're all stupid sometimes. Go eat a hamburger and forget all your worries.

Mailbag: Week of 3-5-05
What do you miss the most about being a little kid?
Workin' hard

What don't I miss! The no homework, no worries, the athletic abilities and motor skills I lack today x_x;... I dunno, I didn't have alot of responsibilities so I pretty much did nothing but play video games and go outside, playing sports like baseball, basketball and soccer. Ah well though right? I can't complain about where I am today, got good grades, great friends, awesome girlfriend, athletic abilities slowly returning... life is good! Lol. But yeah. I guess what I miss most is my Grandpa though, he was so much fun... It was funny when I would go to his house, and my grandma made cheese dip for him, and she'd give me some and he'd have this look like "WTF" on his face... he was joking though... well I'm done now, so yeah ^-^. Later SV.

-UnbrokenTorment

I can honestly say that I miss the lack of responsibilities, but the trade-off between the life I had then and the one I have now definitely favors the present. With greater responsibilities come greater rewards.

-SV

Old Yeller v3.7008234534

Thanks for finding my entry :D I was afraid that the mailbag was screwing with me... Call me a nerd, but I miss playing those ol' Windows 3.1 games from Game Empire. Things like Baldies and Sky Road made playing on crappy computers fun. I also miss this shooting game called something-dogs. Eh. Nothing much I miss about being a kid besides not having the burden of life on me. -StarKirby

I wasn't big on computer games then and I'm still not, even now. I miss the cartridges from my old SNES. I remember my sister and me putting our allowances together to buy Super Mario World...

-SV

Not just for little kids anymore

I miss the tube maze thing at McDonald's.

-Krem

You can always go back when the employees aren't looking. When they notice just tell them you were reliving your childhood.

-SV

Old school Double Dash!!

Hey my last week's reply isn't there. :(

I'm going to have to go with two things. Building tree-forts and my back yard with my frinds, which was awesome. When I was eight my family moved two houses down the road, and the people who lived here before left a bunch of scrap wood in the backyard. I'm pretty sure I've taken part in the building, distruction, and rebuilding of about five million tree-forts.

The other is racing wagons. Me and my friend Josh both had wagons, and one of our neiboors had a long, steep paved driveway, and we'd race down it. Or if we got two more people over we could race down the street by having one person push and the other steer. That's why Mario Kart: Double Dash rocks so much, it reminds me of that. Wagons rulled, every kid should have one.

-stareyE

I only got 5 replies last week and none were yours...I was wondering what had happened; you always reply. Sorry about that.

Anyways, you are awesome! I love racing wagons. There's this big hill next to my house which levels off where my house and driveway are and then slopes downward again. Steering that thing is tough because the directions are reversed.

-SV

fart...it's short for fanart...really

I miss stuff in school they take out when you're older. The required art classes (since now they keep cutting them) and recess. I want my recess back. :( I missed stabbing grasshoppers with sharp sticks.

-Static2007

I miss nap time. It sucks that we don't get free time now that we could really use it, but I'm sure we wouldn't use it to its full potential if we did have it. I don't miss any of the required elective-type courses I had to take except my technology class. It was fun and applied a lot of my favorite subjects: science and math :D:D:D:D.

-SV

"I don't break for nobody" - time

I miss time moving a little less rapidly. It seems there's never time for anything anymore, and that school years pass by quickly. Sure, I hate school, but I don't want to be an adult just yet. Jeez, time.

-Wally

I hate how things move so fast now...I've looked back at my high school years and thought of how much better I would have spend some of that time. Life then seems so much slower looking back on it and comparing it to now. It's my senior year; I've become more involved in school and in the social arena, I'm working harder and spending more time on baseball, and college and the prospect of living on my own are just a few months away. Life is flying by and I'm left wishing I had as much time I used to. I don't want to leave this little niche I've been in for so long, but it's going to happen and I'll get over it soon enough.

-SV
