so! this months big big releases are fire emblem and etrian odyssey. i dont know anything about fire emblem outside of you can make a cute character to lead your party

meanwhile, in eo4 you can make a whole Grip of cute characters do all your fighting!

big changes from eo3 include:
Classes list shamelessly stolen from other forum

Landsknecht:  Physical attacker.  Likes to strike first and can increase the power of your party's followup attacks
Fortress:     Durable tank.  Protects other party members and reduces damage taken by your party
Medic:        Healer.  A mandatory role in this series, though you can regulate it to a subclass later if'n you please
Sniper:       Ranged attacker.  Lots of multi-target options, also good at Binding, which prevents enemies from using certain skills
Dancer:       Combination group attacker / buffer / healer.  Flexible role
Nightseeker:  Specializes in status ailments and setting up tons of damage.  The girl portraits are freaky
Samurai:      Physical attacker.  Can self-buff to increase damage. They're like animal dudes (locked)
Runemaster:   Magic attacker.  Elemental damage with lots of single and multi-target options
Mystic:       They set up 'Zones', which continually provide multi-target debuffing / healing / binding (locked)
Imperial:     Physical attacker.  Based around an overheat/cooldown gimmick where they do huge damage then spend the next few turns recovering (locked)

The demo's gonna be up on the 7th so go on and give it a try! All your progress carries over to the full game and if you preorder you get a cute art book and ost cd. Gamer Hell Yeah http://g-ec2.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/img12/video-games/hqp/EO4Glamshot._V397460303_.jpg

e: and here's the skill tree with detailed explanations of what does what. http://www.crazyuncleivans.com/eo4skillsim/tabbed.html

huh, fire emblem is letting you customize your main character this time? I haven't read up on anything.

Yeah, though the demo just says "not available in the demo" for all the options. But it'll be there in the real version. Which literally comes out tomorrow.

And yeah, I preordered EO4. I don't know if anyone else besides us would really like it but that's what a demo's for!

While I'm in the neigh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flBqK-cHE7w)borhood, Layton and the Miracle Mask is hella rad. If any of you haven't tried the series, why not give it a go in glorious 3D?

EO4 looks awesome, though I never finished EO3 .. I was doing a bit of a challenge playthrough with no dedicated healer, just what my Princess could put out, and it required a lot of overleveling to overcome FOEs once I hit the magma cavern layer so I eventually gave up interest

I actually really liked the ship minigame though, so sad to see it is being changed into a more normal mode of transportation than that of a sidequest

Mario Golf didn't interest me, but the other games (other than the Lego game) were amazing.

Looks like this is truly a good year for 3DS owners. Wii U owners...well we'll see. I still think the biggest thing is the WW HD remake.

New Mario & Luigi RPG and a port of Donkey Kong Country Returns are definitely relevant to my interests, so now the number of 3DS games that I am interested in are definitely at a number where a 3DS is definitely going to be my next console purchase once I can actually afford one.

excited to get a 3DS sometime during March
so I actually got my college refund today, and I have $300 to last me until March 1st when I get paid again ... I can easily fit a 3DS and a game into this budget and still not have any hassles

should I get my system new or refurbished? it's like a $10 difference at Gamestop, $20 at most ... would there be any disadvantage to getting a used one? like, online stuff or whatever

and the hard part: Fire Emblem or Etrian Odyssey?!
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go

also what's the deal with the XL
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Scrow Funk on February 15, 2013, 01:36:51 PM
can't think of any disadvantages to getting a used one... if anything you might luck out and pick up one of the Early Adapter ones with those GBA games installed. or even better you might find someone else's cc info

XL is supposed to have a slightly better battery life, i think? not sure about any other big upgrades besides the size
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Namine on February 15, 2013, 02:39:50 PM
I'd just get a new one, but like Scrow said you might luck out and get the GBA/NES games too. The old one holds up just fine IMO.
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Tenda on February 15, 2013, 04:29:12 PM
I got the regular, used, it was $30 cheaper and $60 cheaper than the XL which counts for a lot when you only have $165 to spend each month

then the guy said only the demo was out for Etrian Odyssey so I got Fire Emblem whoop
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Soaprman on February 15, 2013, 05:58:16 PM
I have an XL. It's bigger (which is quite nice with the 3D), has about the same battery life from what I can tell, and has a different texture that is a little more comfortable.

Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Soaprman on February 15, 2013, 11:36:16 PM
I'm on Hard/Classic and I think Yoshi is, too. Finding it to be "just right".

Making a protag wasn't hard for me because most of the options are kind of bleh. My thought process was:

* Build 3 because I'm not a kid, sheesh!!!!!
* Male because better hair options
* Face 4 because haha look at that sad face
* Hair 3 has the right balance of decent/silly and plus I wear my own hair like that sometimes
* Keeping the white hair, the rest look fucken goof troop
* Male 2 voice because uhhhh...

I did all that and ended up with Mortimer, a respectable tactician with a knack for defense but weak skill skills.

Tenda, you're only a mission in, aren't you? Not too late to start again on Hard!
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Tenda on February 16, 2013, 08:20:05 AM
I'm going to try a few more times to do this mission, then if I start to get frustrated I'll restart on Hard. No sense not getting the fun out of the fruit! Also re: protags, I made a girl with short hair and the least loli of the available builds. Not perfect, but good enough!

I started the EO4 demo, it frakkin rules
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Namine on February 16, 2013, 11:40:01 AM
I'm debating now: EO4 or Fire Emblem. Tough choice.
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Yoshi348 on February 16, 2013, 02:04:50 PM
Yeah, Hard/Classic. Build 3 seemed to grizzled for me and I guess I'm just used to animes being youthful looking. It took a bit to get me to look actually male without build 3, though.

Actually interested in what other people did for their stat options, though. Went with Speed up, because it's a defensive option that works for both magic and physical that also can potentially give you attack power, too. Gave myself Resist down; not perfect but honestly none of them were.
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Tenda on February 16, 2013, 03:50:17 PM
I took Skill up and Resist down, I think ... might have been Strength up

Resist down seemed like a logical choice because there tend to be less spellcasters and when there are spellcasters they tend to be a priority to kill and easy to kill

I am not yet regretting choosing Lunatic/Classic, once I figured out what Pairing Up actually was possible of contributing things got a lot easier. Especially because so far every unit except Frederick is only good for getting killing blows off Frederick or pairing :V

I am enjoying Fire Emblem a lot now that I've got in like a half-dozen missions and all of the actual features are unlocked. Man, do they shower you with free crap though! It's kind of cool to get all the throwback items, though, I just can't get into enough fights to make use of all of them that I find. :P

I should go kill that beast again, just for old time's sake

he has a special drop too if you can kill him in a single turn, but I don't think that I could do that since my party currently relies way too much on buff/debuffs to do a lot of damage on the first turn

anyway I do have a new strategy for the 3rd Stratum B3F boss I'm gonna try later today, it will just take like a week of in-game time to farm all the items (gonna be making fire resist gear)

Post by: Soaprman on March 09, 2013, 11:23:36 AM
Yeah, I've arrived at the door but haven't tried fighting the boss yet. There's an accessory that halves fire damage in the shop that I plan on buying (made from hard shell, dropped by the beetles in the batcave) and I have a rather beastly ice sword (Icy Almace, made from the part dropped by the ice bug FOEs in the overworld) equipped on my elem-damage-up link-happy landsknecht so hopefully I'll be able to get through!

My levels are 37-45. I think I'm good on that front.

Fighting the Boiling Lizard now. Managed to ice stake every scale in the room but one in the corner before the fight. I hope killing the big scale was as helpful as I thought it would be!

Edit 1: Yep, looks like it makes it start with half health. I can dig it. :knuckles:

Edit 2: Had to flee the battle when he was almost dead. I didn't have enough attack-all ice spells to keep the scales frozen. Next time...!
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Tenda on March 09, 2013, 06:39:35 PM
You can use Ice Stakes from inventory to one-shot scales the turn after they appear, if you don't mind fighting the boss from full health ... I couldn't find a path that let me reach the big scale before the lizard caught up to me, so I resorted to this, but he had just waaay too much health. I decided to Rest my characters and go all-in with more streamlined builds of what was working with me previously. Having all the surplus points to dump into the 40+ level tier skills + subclasses has really been a boon so I think with this setup I should beat him next time I try. I also went into it with the five fire rings and a pair of Icy Almates, but too much of my damage was tied up into status effect prerequisites and so I could survive just fine but wasn't whittling him down nearly fast enough to last the whole battle.
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Soaprman on March 09, 2013, 10:14:26 PM
I can't believe I never thought to use the ice stakes. Not that I was short on one-shots. Second attempt went much better though. I taught my arcanist blizzard rune and it made all the difference.

To kill the big scale, the small ones have to be killed first of course. And it's not possible to do in one trip through the room without getting into a fight with the big man. I had to revisit the room like 7 times to finally get to the big one... each visit, I would whack one and leave with the lizard one square behind me. I used camouflage and tame ground to keep from getting burned and in fights.
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Tenda on March 11, 2013, 02:39:47 PM
Well, with the above tips, I was able to do it. I was actually able to do it in 4 turns -- thanks to my new secret Burst tech (Black Mist + Blind/Paralyze + Shadow Bite (sometimes triggering a second Shadow Bite + Squall Volley (which never misses a single shot with the above statuses). In my original fight he shrugged off Blind after one turn, but with Black Mist he stayed Blind for turns 2, 3, and the 4th where he died. I was doing like 5000+ damage a turn. :X

I forgot to equip the Fire Rings prior to starting the fight, and almost kicked myself in the head for it, but Mind Break + a Fire Mist + Fire Rune gave me enough fire protection that his initial hit-all only hit everybody for 40. I was able to regen right through all of his attacks without any real healing.

Paused at the #plot# that follows afterwards, going back through the game getting some items I missed and renewing the stock of consumables at the store. I also swapped out my Fortress/Medic for an Arcanist/Medic because I've grown so reliant on status effects and because my Fortress was proving underwhelming. Short of spamming Party Guard, which left him unable to use his shitty heals (poor TEC stat), he just wasn't very good at the job of protecting the party, even with max Taunt. I used one of my two Bushi scrolls to autolevel the Arcanist to level 35, and now she's slowly catching up to the rest of the party. With so much passive health regen I have now, lair crawling is a lot easier and I have to revisit town/use consumables and heal spells a lot less frequently. I get a free heal at the end of every turn a circle is up, Patch Up when I finish the fight, and heals just for every step I take thanks to the Arcanist skill that follows their safe-ground-stepping one. All-in-all happy with the swap of classes!

I was gonna say "it's not that rare" but with the 2 on HP as well dayum.

Meanwhile today I got lucky on DLC; poor Nowi started facing 50x2 because oops, Exalted Falchion deals bonus damage against dragons. She had 60 health and then Marth proc'd Luna (probably an instant kill)... and missed a 90% hit rate attack. Nowi was next to her husband Donnel so there was an extra 15-20% chance I would have lived but dayum. Donnel parried the second hit btw, which helped because she had more enemies able to target her. None did, but they might have if she was a tastier target.

There was Xevious. Xevious had a NES port but the 3D Xevious was the arcade version.

By the way, Art of Balance (in the eShop) is a cool game. It's a puzzle game where the game gives you pieces and you have to build a tower with them that doesn't fall over.

I'm definitely picking up Animal Crossing, so I should probably go reserve it. There are like 4 Gamestop within 10 minutes of me and they never stock a goddamn thing unless you preorder. They get way too much sadistic pleasure out of giving me the "you should have preordered it, we only have preorder copies" spiel over the phone.

I think I have a wealth of everything, for the person who needs anything. My town name is Marenali which will just be nonsense to anyone but me because in The Namine Spirit I named it using a fictional language from a fictional civilization in my fictional novel. It means something like oasis, but if you look at my town and the 600 or so trees I've planted and the fact it's been raining for about 10 days in a row you're going to think tropical rainforest instead.

Sounds like I gots a catch up to people. I don't have everything. I only recently got my development permit and enacted my first ordinance (night owl). Saving up to build a bridge next so the river that basically divides my town in two but only has one bridge near an end of it stops bothering me so much!

Though, the game is sharing my attention with Luigi's Mansion and Project X Zone (only playing a bit, then going to get a 3DS capture board and imagefest it) so my ability to progress will be limited.

Namine we should visit each other's towns again sometime this week. Also re-add the best friend thing because I don't think it saved?

Also, what is your native fruit? I've got a cabinet of perfect cherries I'm looking to unload in a town where cherries are rare and referred to by the villagers as red gold.

btw, had to cut down more trees because apparently having too many makes you lose perfect town status if you have it. I had about 230 trees and cutting down about 15 of them got me my perfect town status back.

I planted a tree in every possible place. I didn't use a grid configuration, though, those are ugly. It was more like ... hexagonal. Because hexes. Everyone who visits my town just calls it 'the forest.'
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Soaprman on August 05, 2013, 06:26:05 PM
I use straight-up vertical/horizontal paths in my residental area with trees planted kind of randomly, but my forested area uses some hexagonal layouts too! Trees in a plain box grid layout look so bad.

Basically, they're laid out like this, or like this rotated 90°.

Should probably get around to playing FE. Any particular ones I should start with or is it more of a "jump in and play" dealie?
Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Draino on January 12, 2014, 07:45:24 PM
yeah jump in anywhere, the plots mostly have very little relation to each other (with the exception of Radiant Dawn, which Path of Radiance is a prerequisite for) and all of the ones released in the last decade (everything since the GBA game that was just called Fire Emblem) are pretty newbie-friendly.

exception: there is a DS game called Shadow Dragon, which is a remake of the very first game in the series. it is ugly as shit and not very much fun because it stays too faithful to the original. don't start there.

Title: Re: 3DS Thread for Gamers On The Go
Post by: Soaprman on January 12, 2014, 08:02:14 PM
Awakening is really something of a "greatest hits" version of Fire Emblem. It's like they decided to take all the coolest things in past games and stuff them all into the same game. It worked spendidly.

If you only play one FE game, I recommend Awakening just for all the random cool stuff in it and the multiple difficulty levels. Also, the other games won't suddenly look dated because you played Awakening... they aged quite well. Especially the GBA ones with the wikkid sikk sprite animations!

As for me, I'm wrapping up my 1.5th playthrough (reloaded from an old save instead of starting over) of SMTIV. All I have left to do is beat the fuckoff hard postgame DLC bosses.

So I beat A Link Between Worlds between lectures yesterday and good god it's one of the most fantastic games I've played in years. Probably best Zelda game. I'll decide when I've done my yearly ALttP playthrough.

Dream Team Bros keeps being great too. Goddamn this system has great stuff, now I just await Sayonara Umihara Kawase to hit European eShop.

The stand that came with Kid Icarus has proven surprisingly useful too but not even for playing, just having the system resting on it when I'm just doing things like eShop or not doing anything in particular or whatever. I should play more Kid Icarus though. It feels a bunch like a spiritual successor to Sin & Punishment. Which I do need to play the actual sequel to.

I want Layton vs Wright to come out in NA already, it's the only 3DS thing I'm actually excited about these days.

I guess they're waiting until a little while after Azran Legacy (which we got only recently) before releasing it. Or maybe they just want to see us squirm. Or maybe both.

In lieu of a 3DS Ouendan I think I'm gonna have to get Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call when it comes out over here.

Also, Kirby Triple Deluxe soon hits. Hype.

I know I'm behind on the gaming times, but I am playing Bravely Default right now. Gonna go ahead and point out that I love it so far (in Ch 3, Mythril Mines). The way the story is told reminds me of Tales of Symphonia with all the party chats.

Anyway, the whole reason I'm posting is I got the Sweeper bonus on a group of Succubi and it netted me exactly 666 pg. Coincidence? Doubtful.

Maybe one of these days I will buy a game around release time so I can enjoy it with other people.

Bravely Default is thoroughly good with some decent characters. Do not stop playing it, you'll love the last 25%.

I was worried at first about how the game would be with so many different classes, but it doesn't seem too overwhelming now (I have about half and just got the pirate). I'm loving my spell blade/valkyrie combo.

My favorite thing about the game is probably the boss fights, particularly against the other people you get the class whatsits from. It's just so fun to come up with various party setups and see how they do against the bosses, especially the harder late-game boss fights. There are definitely some game-breakingly good setups possible, too. Like, enemies-never-get-to-do-anything-ever good.
